Acrylic Foam

Request from the Customer
A material which is able to absorb impacts on thin cover glass of a display surface.

Iwatani’s Proposal:‟Reexamine our acrylic materials and develop an acrylic foam that keeps the acrylic foam density low and is resilient against surface impacts.”
Iwatani commercialized Acrylic Foam, a foam made from acrylic materials expected to exhibit high impact absorbing performance when exposed to direct impacts.
For example, with the aim of absorbing the impact received when a ball is dropped directly on the foam, this foam performs well against point impacts.
For this request, by reexamining our acrylic materials and keeping the acrylic foam density low, we managed to develop a product with different properties than the point impact resistant foam we had developed to date. By installing this foam underneath a fragile product such as the thin cover glass of a smartphone, impacts can be absorbed. Thanks to the foam’s excellent surface impact performance, it has become popular with many customers.

Request from the Customer
A material able to absorb impacts that can be used as a vibration suppression measure.

Iwatani’s Proposal:‟An acrylic foam with a thickness to meet the customer’s needs with suitable point impact absorption properties.”
For vibration absorption, we utilized an acrylic foam with suitable point impact absorption properties, and by proposing a thickness requested by the customer, managed to achieve vibration suppression performance superior to that of other materials.

Request from the Customer
A material able to absorb sound that can be used as a sound absorption measure.

Iwatani’s Proposal:‟An acrylic foam that utilizes the vibration damping properties of foam.”
We focused on the vibration damping properties of foam and when we proposed an acrylic foam, we were able to confirm that it was also effecting in absorbing sound. In the future we expect to expand the applications of the foam for sound absorbing purposes

Foam Tape

Request from the Customer
A foam material that can be compressed with low load and features a high repulsive force that can revert to its original thickness immediately after removal of the load.

Iwatani’s Proposal:‟A urethane foam utilizing proprietary manufacturing techniques to achieve high repulsive force and restorative capabilities while being extremely soft and low-density.”
While an acrylic foam with high impact absorption performance is among Iwatani’s flagship products, since acrylic is a flexible material, it was not easy to produce a foam with high repulsive force. Given this, we changed the material to urethane, and by utilizing proprietary manufacturing techniques we have acquired to date, managed to develop a urethane foam with enhanced high repulsive force and restorative capabilities while being extremely soft and low-density.
The foam is well regarded as an anti-rippling and anti-pooling measure for LCDs.

Urethane Protection Film

Request from the Customer
While a protective film that uses a silicon adhesive is used in touch panels and LCD modules, it is expensive. What’s more, as silicon migrates over to the adherend, it can pose problems for later processes.
The customer wanted a protective film for which silicon migration was not a concern.

Iwatani’s Proposal:‟A urethane protective film that achieves an equivalent air-expelling performance to silicon at a low cost.”
We used a urethane adhesive material able to produce an air-expelling performance on par with silicon that also featured cost competitiveness. After prototyping the material, we successfully commercialized a protective film that met the customer’s requirements.

Double-sided Adhesive Tape

Request from the Customer
With the increasing thinness of mobile devices such as smartphones and tablets, the materials used therein need to be increasingly thin. The customer wanted to further reduce the thickness of the double-sided tape used to fix anti-heat graphite sheets, anti-noise sheets and ferrite sheets.

Iwatani’s Proposal:‟10μm and 6μm ultrathin double-sided tape.”
We began selling 10μm and 6μm ultrathin double-sided tape, which was actually used for graphite sheets and ferrite sheets. We have also engaged in the development of the industry’s thinnest double-sided tape at 3μm, which is also eagerly awaited by customers.

Optical Clear Silicon Adhesive

Request from the Customer
While high-transparency adhesive sheets that use acrylic adhesive materials (OCA) are used for touch panel products, the customer sought a highly reliable OCA that could also be deployed in the in-vehicle equipment field.
In addition, an OCA whose refractive index could be designed and adjusted as desired would enhance freedom of design and was more preferable.

Iwatani’s Proposal:‟Develop an OCA using silicon adhesive materials that are superior to acrylic.”
Iwatani already possessed manufacturing technologies related to OCA from its track record commercializing an acrylic-based OCA.
Given this, we began development of an OCA using a silicon adhesive material that was superior to acrylic in terms of weathering resistance and attracted intense interest from customers.

Hard Coated Protective Film

Request from the Customer
The customer was considering a highly re-workable protective film with weak adhesiveness and high air-expelling properties as a surface protection for the electronic components used in touch panels and LCD modules during working processes and shipping. In addition, to prevent scratching during working processes, a film incorporating hard coat functionality would be more preferred.

Iwatani’s Proposal:‟A protective film with a hard coat and silicon adhesive layer possessing excellent self-absorption and high air-expelling performance on the adherend.”
We developed a protective film with a hard coat and silicon adhesive layer possessing excellent self-absorbing properties and high air-expelling performance on the adherend.
In addition, by adding anti-fingerprint functionality to the hard coat, we managed to produce a product that not only protects against scratching but also has the effect of preventing dirtying, and this feature has been highly regarded by customers.
